The history of of Brahmaputra Jungle Resort is a story of a prolonged struggle of thirteen years of how a youth with no capital base and with society’s support, has converted a remote inaccessible hill into a paradise for tourists.
When Mr Tridib Sarma visited the area for the first time in the year 1998 he encountered wild elephants on this plot and immediately it came to his mind that there is no reason why tourists cannot be attracted to this area to see wild animals and birds, the area being so close to Guwahati and blessed with the best of natural beauty. Provided, essential infrastructures like road and electricity can be built. At that time the road measuring more than a kilometer was non-motor-able even during winter, and during monsoon it was impossible even for people to walk. Electricity also could not be dreamt off. With prolonged effort and extensive investment today the plot is blessed with an all season motor-able road and 3 phase electricity connection.
Amchang Wild Life Sanctuary was than just a reserved forest. It was on his initiative that a proposal was mooted to declare the forest as a wild life sanctuary in the year 2004. As a result of a well-organized campaign it was declared so in the year 2005.
Massive plantation of citrus, arcenut and fruit trees was undertaken. The trees have started yielding fruits already. The area is often frequented by deer, and varieties of birds. In order to lure them varieties of fruit bearing trees to their choice have been planted so that once the trees start bearing fruits the area is expected to be a paradise for birds and deer watching.
The Resort has a mini lake at a height of 60m from the highway which was made by constructing embankments to retain the water of the perennial stream that flows through the Resort. It is often visited by deer early morning. Wild frowns are commonly seen. Varieties of monkeys are also frequent visitors.
The Swiss tents are set up in the midst of total jungle ambience to give the pleasure of jungle camp life. The tents are attached with modern toilets and well furnished living room.
The traditional cottages are improvised Mising chang-ghars – elevated cottages using bamboo structure, bamboo walls and thatched roof, traditionally used by the Mising tribes living in Upper Assam.
The Resort has a common boundary with the Sanctuary. There is a huge rock on the boundary, which is easily assessable from the Resort side and from where the entire Sanctuary can be viewed. It works as a viewpoint.
